Jason Pearson....What the Hell ?

Postby obstacle1 » Fri May 16, 2008 10:41 am

I have always loved Jason Pearson's work. But what is his deal , I mean we will see his art for a while then he will disappear for a while. How does this guy make any money ?
I keep hearing we are going to get another Body Bags . Anyway, he is drawing a new Penguin book for DC's Joker Asylum line.

Here are some amazing pieces. Post more.

I've found that when a great comic book artist disappears from the scene, he's off in Hollywood making a boatload of money on storyboards and designs. Not sure if that's the case here...

Yeah, there's a world outside comic books for the professional illustrator. One that pays a lot better too.

Why bother coming back to comics ? Especially to do a Black Panther cover and a Penguin one-shot ?

When you can make great money doing other stuff, it's okay to live with not-so-great money doing the stuff you loved in the first place. Also, I'm thinking Jason Pearson is getting a nice chunk of change for a cover that probably takes him a couple of hours to do.

It's not like you have to pick one or the other. Freelancers do a lot of different things at once.

i think Pearson does pretty well for himself during convention season...not enough to making a living, but his cheap-print sketchbooks are really expensive for what he puts into them moneywise and does a LOT of commissions

I'm going to go ahead and assume that he's off making money somewhere. Making a buck in comics is an unbelievable struggle, even after you've broken in... And, a lot of the time, after you've 'made it'.

Pearson put the word out that he was wiling to do interiors for anyone on virtually anything, but the phone didn?t ring. ?The thing was, the market had changed. A lot of the editors that I had come in with were gone, and the mindset was gone ? it was no longer an artist?s market, where you could be egotistical, blow off deadlines, and basically not work more than you wanted, which we saw in the early ?90s. Now, it?s a writer?s market ? now all the big-time writers over commit and blow deadlines, and it?s the artists who have to maintain the schedules,?

It's pretty crazy that the gears have changed that much. Still, no artists = no comic books.
