Hey Matthewshadinger,

I like your piece because it has character. And believe me, I don't over-flatter you. You have accomplished some things with it that are good. One secret that I can give you, And this is a humongous one that many find hard to believe but here it is. Present your artwork as if it is the last piece of artwork you will ever have the pleasure of creating and likewise create it in the same fashion. Cause' who knows which one will be the last?

Any who, as far as your question on faces:
It's good to draw exactly what you see but also to distinguish what can be omitted to capture something's essence without including too much information. In the case of the youthfulness of the model's face, you can leave out the dark smile lines and cheeks. It is a common problem when drawing from a photograph but in most cases in simple line-art or lightly shaded shaded drawings, leaving this line in to dark or defined can give the impression of more maturity in the face than desired. Try it and trust me. Leave out the smile lines and you, with-out fail, will have more youth in drawings a faces.

Peace :D

Thanks for the advice Jaminator! I'm already a perfectionist so sometimes I just have to stop or I can spend hours and hours drawin the same hand over and over, or erasing until the paper starts to get thin. So if I think it's the last drawing I'll ever draw I might go crazy haha. I never thought about omiting details to capture the essence though, I'll have to try that on my next drawing... I'll try another Olivie photo that was posted this weekend.

I used to just draw Anime characters and I never got any better so this year I stopped drawing that kind of stuff and really started to try to become a better artist by drawing still lifes and practicing drawing realistic stuff, such as people from photos. I have improved a bit since january, but I still have so far to go (I wish I was younger).

Firstly welcome to the DrawingBoard Mathew.

I totally agree with the Jaminator that this sketch definitely has character!
That was good advice Jam!

ok I did another drawing of Olivie. This time I tried to learn from the past one ;). I went very light on the shading, and I omited some detail on the face as Jaminator suggested. I'm a lot happier with this one than I was with the first one I did.

Matthewshadinger wrote:This is my first Jam and first post. I was happy with the lines but I did a terrible job shading it. Not happy at all. Oh well I figured maybe at least I can get some feed back. What's the secret to capturing the face? I can never seem to get the facial features right when drawing a person like this.

The eyes should be angled down. In the photo they are angled way down, whereas in your drawing they are angled up.

Also, watch the jaw. Like a lot of people you have a tendency to make it more delicate than it should be. Look at the very small distance between the corner of the mouth and the edge of the face (on the model's left side).

The arm and hand look really nice.

I was very intrigued by the pose in the first photo and decided to really exaggerate it. I penciled it in quickly, added watercolor and then scanned it and did line work in Photoshop.

In the interest of full disclosure I admit I did do ink lines by hand and completely destroyed the piece...sigh. Thankfully, since I had scanned it before inking I still had a chance to do the lines digitally, and salvage it somewhat.

So is the image we see here the photoshop linework? I really love the linework here, and if this was your reject, I'd have to disagree. Loose and accurate linework is really cool to me.

starblur11: Thank you!

jlederman: Thanks; this image has linework done in Photoshop and is not the rejected version; I had a difficult time with the pen I used on the original piece--an old crowquil pen that wouldn't behave--and it ended up looking badly overworked. I had scanned the painting pre-linework so I went in and did the lines in PS.

Phoebe geebees: Thanks! I am trying to become more skilled using watercolor; I'm just fascinated with the things (so often unexpected!) that happen with watercolor on paper...

Nice pencil work Matthewshadinger, keep it up and you'll definitely find you improve.

BurnComics. Lovely Line work and flat tones!

IMForeman: Lookin good!

ChrissieA: I like how you've really exaggerated the arch in her back. The watercolour texture is very interesting to look at, plus leaving that little bit of white paper to highlight the breast is great.
