First time poster to these jam sessions... may be a little late, but i'm loving everyone's work so far. Maverickanim's stuff is sticking out in my mind particularly.

I'm trying to break out of drawing purely in black and white, so i'm experimenting with colours here..crits and stuff welcome.

All right, it took me the full month's worth of spare time, but here is my take on this month's Jam. It is a 3D Paper Playset. (I won't bother posting the actual pieces unless someone out there is interested in putting one together for themselves.)

Hope y'all dig it.

playset

Postby doktor-U » Wed Jun 02, 2004 1:18 am

ca2na: I just loove your piece. the parts themself are really nicely drawn. But the idea of making a pop-up is friggin nice! Bravo! smooth colors, and the pillows of the carseats are
so cool!
I happened to do a bunch of playsets too, but just for fun or for my son, so nothing really outraging.
Is that all hand-drawn, or did you print the parts, or mixxed? first I thought you did that with some kind of 3d programmy (which can be very funny too for making paper-playsets).

here?s a little playset i entitled "vice city jr."

nothing big, just wanted to share...

great work by everyone ... so much inspiring work in one place.

comments. here goes ...

maverikanim - lovely. i really like all the strong angles throughout the pic.

Lavern n Shirley - i love how you did those boots.

Timmy Toons - excellent work with the pose. i'm not sure about the purple glow around her, to me it's a bit distracting.

Freger - i agree with your wife, you probably don't need the outlines.

Citizen UNICRON - both pics are top notch. i wish i could ink like that.

BIG AL - those shapes are outta this world. so simple and elegant.

Jason C-M - excellent work. love how you worked in a nice breeze ... adds a lot of atmosphere.

maverikanim - damn ... that's gorgeous. really dig the hair.

doktor-U - #1) love how you made use of that right arm position. #2) Oops, spilled the ... milk.

Lync - I think the standing pose is ever so slightly stubby as you said. The lying pose is quite good ... I would say that the face on that one looks a litte off, and the hair looks like it should have a little more volume and sit on top of the head.

themaze75 - don't worry that rust comes off quickly. the crit i would have is that the face looks just barely squished. i think just dropping the chin line a hair is all it needs. I really like how balanced your figure looks.

n69n - love your shapes and coloring. the second one is very elegant.

XAV - all of them are great, but you really nailed the lying pose. There's a wonderful sense of depth in that one, and the face and hands are seriously prime. great work.

Salvor - welcome. love those long sexy legs.

MrJonn - great work on both pics. i prefer the first one as i think i just comes together a little better.

AzzaMcKazza - nice work. she's pretty, but i don't know if i could date a girl who only has 4 fingers. i'm likin' the big eyes.

Popynsky - peach pleasure :) i really like elements of both drawings. the larger one has a much better sense of balance ... the small one is starting to lean too far back. i like how you did the folds ... very cool.

Ransom - i think the face is nice even if it doesn't look identical. i like the tone, but i think it's overly soft ... i think you could use some harder edges in various places.

salme - and a fine first post it is. welcome. i love everything about it, including that really cute bathing suit.

themaze75 - that sure is different. i really love the texture in this one.

LauraMW - looks like a solid effort to me. her torso looks slightly stretched to me as if the hips were pulled away from the wall.

Ian - hardly a poor effort. i totally dig the strong shapes.

InkFarm - brilliant. you've captured the pose perfectly.

ScarletNocturne - it's never too late for a drawing or 10. you've got the pose well, but from an anatomy perspective the rib cage looks a little too big. The mantra I typically use as check is "Men are apples, women are pears."

WRuv - very finely crafted. My only suggestion would be to push the contrast a bit more on you shading. The lighting is apparent, but it could be a bit stronger. great work on those hands too.

bittersweetfatkid - very solid work. keep the colors comin'.

geezer - the hair looks a bit undefined, so try sharpening that up. checkout that knee anatomy.

car2na - easily the best jam artwork i have ever seen. so original and beautifully executed.

Thorsten Hasenkamm - you stuff is so vibrant and simple it blows me away. i see what you mean about the feet ... tough decision.

Cheers.

Wow! You guys are TOO kind.

Lavern n Shirley: I'll post the pieces sometime soon, so you can put it together, if you want to. I'll have to draw up a quick instruction sheet so people other than me can make sense out of it.

doktor-U: I drew everything directly in Flash, and printed the end-product on card-stock. I didn't use a 3D program, but I would've if I'd had access to an inexpensive one. As a result, it took many MANY trials and errors before everything fit together properly. Cool to see your playset. I thought I might be the only one with this weird interest.

geezer87: That was the greatest compliment I've ever received, given the calibre of work that has appeared on the Jam. Just being allowed to post here amongst the rest of you guys is a huge honor.

I recently posted another playset in the Illustration forum, if you guys are interested:
http://www.sketchbooksessions.com/shanesboard/viewtopic.php?t=17321&highlight=

I wasn't sure whether I should keep posting these on this board, but given the response, I will definitely be posting more when I have them.

geezer: thanks for remindin all of us on c&c, it?s bloody important! everybody should take that twenty minutes or less, in giving something back, even if it?s just some personal impressions.
so here?s my 2 cent:

Burn: great pix! challenging poses.

maverikanim: first of all, your avatar(the guy with the shoe (?)) is the coolest. is he from Mr.Ed or something like that? anyway. I like the color choices very much, and the skirt pattern is great. I just completely love her face -> the green eyes are so wonderfull.
the only thing is her breast that lacks just a little attention... you know, just a weee bit more detail.

Lavern: that style kicks ass! the floating hair looks great, goes good with the bg and her face. maybe the topmost haircurl is too much. somehow the nose in the skribble looks waaay better.

Luchs: veeeery manga! the pose of the body is really good, especially legs and arms. I just dont like the real big gumboots for a sweet creature like that :D

Shmisten: Simple, but nicely done.

TimmyToons: I like that! very warm colors- the hair is nice. the hair is so clean, but her legs and hands are very blurry...that doesnt fit all too good. also you should maybe think about a different bg... but besides that I find it really appealing.

StudioBueno: Great work!!!! I just loove that simple and expressive style. Big yoself up!

Freger: Nice Legs!

timmgilette: nice skribble- ink and color it, man!

CitizenUnicorn: 1)BAM!! Ultra-Professional Style! Congrats! I especially like her shoes and the bikini pattern.
2) again! awesome!

BigAl: great sketch, dig that! maybe the waist a little bit too long (?).

Jason: great expression on the face and the body language... very, very nice!

Shoxi: nice, a little bit rough.

Maverikanim: uuh that?s nice! especially here hair and the flower in it!... so sweet! great mood.

Jason: even better now.

Lync: nice butt... need to work on the face

Lavern #2: now thats awesome! great colorin technic... the hips look sexy! the bg kicks ass!!! especially the sun! very nice!!!

theMaze: havent seen you in awhile ! yeah, the legs are a bit short...

n69n: #1:thats sweet! simple, stylish, colorful...me likey... the absolutey crooked pose is great.
#2: thats friggin awesome!!!!!!! tremendous style! just the waist is too flat.

XAV: great pencils, really good work at the face, especially in pic #3, which is my fav!
looks really sexe :P

Salvor: welcome! simple, but appealing...i like the brushy-style

Mr.Jonn: #1: very cute face!, the hair is nice, all in all a very Disney-like style
#2: nice curves, but a little bit more detail on the pullover would be nice! the face is sweet, the strokes are maybe a bit unbalanced.

AzzaMcKazza: those eyes!!! simply adoreable!!! very cute face, with that little nose and mouth.

Moonman: nice skribbles! i like the right one way better!! the boots are nicely shaded. and the wrinkles on the cloth are nice.

popynsky: the right one is way better... way more original... the wrinkles on both are very nice.. good work!

RUllman: finish it! the pose is allready fine, but her head seams too big.

Ransom: nice PS rendering.the sweater is my fav spot.

Leander: interesting style.. she seems a bit muscular. i like the colors

salme: wow! soo nice! first of all I loove the contrast between hair and skin! great colorin techinc. her bikini looks soo sweet too!

Maze: #2: THATS BETTAH! super-sick weirdo-style!!! massive! just got to love that.
(reminds me of the "old" stuff you did, a year ago)

Arose: very funky colorin! good job on the face.

troup: oh! thats simple! bravo! nailled it just with those 20 lines!! I need to preactice that too.

anoula: strange strange technics!! very experimental. her butt looks a bit kinky.

LauraMW: nice face.

Ian: great pic! I like the kinky lines, and the color scheme. though her face looks so hard and male.. like the women in Hercules. but still its a great pic!

Inkfarm: yess, thats some serious nice work. awesome pose.

ScarletNocturne: very realistic and linear, sure comes great with some watercolors! her hip seems too thin and her right breats a bit akward, but all in all it still looks very balenced and skilllfull.

Wruv: nice shading.. legs too short... but solid artwork! good stuff

bittersweetfatkid: simple and nice. the pose is ok, just the fingers look a bit stumpy... shading is just fine. keep em coming!!

geezer: the colorin looks fine, just the shading on the arms and the face is a bit too blurry

car2na: we should maybe make a thread with fun stuff like that. I can?t tell you how much
I loooove stuff like that.

Thorsten: watching you draw is something awesome. it?s just great how your style
developed and changed through the time.. I completely envy you for that balance and cleanliness.

puh! I?m through! hope I didnt offend anyone!
cheers.
