How do they do that?

Postby i like art » Sat Dec 04, 2010 7:50 am

Can anyone tell me how they get the graininess in this poster. I have been trying to find out how and haven't come up with anything. I used noise and grain in PS but it wasn't right.

Any help would be appreciated.

The grain seems very subtle to my eyes.. I'm pretty sure you're on the right track, by playing with the "noise" filters. Maybe there's some blurring, too? Not sure. And impossible to say, without contacting the creator of the Image. Keep playin' around with it in PS, and I'm sure a workable solution will arise!

As Atterzarf said, it's very subtle. I even think the texture you like is actually just the textures of the materials, clothing etc and not an overlayed post effect.

I think the photo's been sharpened to bring out some of the photos details, making it seem 'noisier'. You might want to try that.

Also this is the process I use for adding noise to my works. This might help-

1. Add a mid grey layer.
2. Add noise (desaturated, not color noise)
3. Blur once.
4. Add dust and scratches filter (this adds a bit more variety to the noise)
5. Change layer mode to 'overlay' and take it down to about 10-20%.
