Well, just to jump out of long time lurk mode to answer this question halfway seriously, you might want to check out a book in the "Teach Yourself Visually" or "Quickstart Guide to" series. However since you're using an older version of photoshop, you might want to check out a used book store for such titles.
Unless you are familiar with other image editing programs, you can't just jump right in and become an expert, nor could anyone really explain in a few paragraphs here how to use a program like photoshop. Now if you have specific questions, thats a bit different. But it can take months to really master photoshop.
Also, the version of the program you are using is rather old, so you might want to check out something more recent (CS or CS2) if you can.
Or, you know, you could just ask enough questions on enough message boards until someone directly tells you
