cartoonStock - Legit?

cartoonStock is talking to me about representing my work. Does anybody have any experience with these guys? Is this a good way to make money and a name for myself, or am I about to sign over the rights to my portfolio and get screwed?

IMHO
most stock houses are sketchy.
I don't personally believe they will help your career as an illustrator.
the images get sold on CD's with other people's work- and the buyer of the CD
is free to use your work altering it, combining it with other elements etc.
The prices they pay per piece are usually embrassingly low so as to be insulting.
Most houses will want you to sell over the rights to your work as well.
To make any sort of money from it you have to work fast and sell many images.
This will sound snobbish- but it is how I feel-
If you are interested in selling your cartoons- try doing it on spec first.
Send them to popular magazines- and get rejected a few times-You will sell one eventually. Don't settle for Cartoon Stock.
The work on that sight looks like a bunch of New Yorker style rejects.
That is to say the art isn't good and the humor is much worse. I haven't seen your work
but I'm betting it is 200x better than the generic looking work showcased there.
Never undersell yourself.
I hope that helps you out a bit. I just really hate stock illustration- I see it as a commodity in the worst sense of the definition "a mass-produced unspecialized product"
It serves it's purpose- as little more than a decoration.
