Reverse Engineering A Model Sheet? (Working Backwards)

Postby Aphius » Wed Jan 04, 2006 7:23 am

Has anyone ever considered, (I suppose you'd call it) reverse Engineering Model Sheets?

The way I would imagine it working would be, you could take multiple screenshots and trace over parts of the character in focus on them.

You could do things like;
~ Approximate the basic shapes that best make up the character
~ Approximate Facial Structure and positioning of features
~ Compile lists of expressions, poses, hands, feet etc.
~ Create approximate height comparison sheets for characters seen together

Then collect the information onto several seperate model sheets for easy viewing. :D

It'd be great for characters where model sheets were far and few between. Everyone knows tracing is a no-no in the artistic world, but nobody would exactly try and pawn them off as their own work. :?

Just as an example,

Original Image >> Traced Shapes Over Image >> Basic Shapes

Although I really have no use for a Mr. Crabs model sheet, it shows how it would be done for obtaining the basic shapes of a character. :)

Well, what does anyone else think?
You take the blue pill and you’ll crack a hard on that warrants new pants.
You take the red pill and you get so buzzed you’ll have to hug your toilet.

Remember, all I am offering is a massive woody, nothing more.

Well I guess I'll take that either as an indication I've posted this in the wrong section of the forum or everyone thinks it's a terrible idea. :?

I think it would be usefulll in understanding basic shapes and how they are applied in animation.

It wouldn't just be basic shapes though, I just used that as an example. It would make all kinds of character references like construction, details of features, clothing etc. :)

I think it is a very interesting idea.

Especially for complex characters.

I should probably knock up a full sheet of a character as an example and show people what I mean for a real one. :)
