Wowzers Walrus... the amount of detail you put into your work is depressing me! In other words, I am in awe of your talent and this is jaw droppingly crazy amazing. How do you come up with such a background? Fantastic.

5/16/2008 - the background for the background

Posted by walrus
Thanks, guys, glad you like it!

As for the background, do you mean how did I come up with the idea of how did I actually do it? The idea, I don't know where it came from. Some random sketches of ideas for "new" shapes for skyscrapers. But then it looked too sterile, so it needed some plant life. I dunno why I used mushrooms - I could have come up with something more alien, I guess. <shrug.>

AS for how I did it, I modeled the background simply in 3D, not with all the details or textures, just the basic shapes to get the form correct. I brought in my 2D sketches and modeled to match those, and then moved lights around to try to find something that made nice shadows on the walls. Once that was done, I brought it into Photoshop and did all my texturing there, in "paint", not as a 3D texture. It helped rendering out some of the buildings covered with a simple stripe texture just to give me an idea of where to place all the windows.
