4/4/2007 - Sketchwork for a new large illo

'Couple' sketch

This is preliminary sketch-work for a new illustration I'm working on. The way I work is to sketch a lot on paper, scan it all in, assemble in Photoshop, scribble over it some more, print it out, scribble on it even more, scan it in, reassemble, etcetera, etcetera, 'til I'm happy with it. At this point, I've got a handful of layers, which you can see in the subtly different colors on each section - seperate layers for the main characters, trolls, weapons, and background.

From here I'll print it out and trace it to make my final line art. But if anyone sees anything I should fix before I get to that point...?

4/4/2007 - Seen this before?

My first reaction to the piece was "Haven't I seen this before?" And it bugged me enough to go check your portfolio - or at least what's posted. No, it is different, but it looks familiar.

Maybe it's the combination of a familiar story (similar to Blackwatch) and characters (Mercy and friend). Or maybe that it is so typical of your work that it seems familar. Or maybe that you've told the story so well that it resonates immediately. Hmm.

Not that it isn't good - you know I like your stuff.

p.s. Congrats on the Honourable Mention!

But what I really like is that her shirtsleeve is missing. At least one is, and I like the muscles. But Graham could have told you that!

Well, in a way it's intentionally similar to Farewell Kiss - looking at my portfolio, i realized that I actually didn't have all that much fantasy in there. And when I'd been working on that piece, folks semed excited to see that I was makign a kick-ass female going off to battle. Such a disappointment when they learned that it was a boy with long hair, not a girl. But ever since then, I've been wanting to do a tough, fightin' female character. Glad you like the missing sleeve - Tal liked that part too!

Haven't seen you in a while - you always end up over when I'm out. Hope I'll get to see you at some point soon... Graham's b'day is coming up. I'm sure she's just LOVE a big party! :/

I don't see anything wrong with it, but then again I lack in the skills of human anatomy...
