Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - See them twice
I saw Batman Begins last night, for the second time. Funny how lately, I've needed two viewings at least to truly enjoy the quality of a movie. When I first saw BB a couple of weeks ago, I was a little let down by the beginning of the movie, in which the pace and the editing seemed a little lack-luster, and the dialogue boring to death (how many times does Henri Qui-Gon Ducard say "fear" in the movie anyway?!). But then I enjoyed more and more the movie as soon as Wayne came back to Gotham, and I was blown away by the last 20 minutes or so. Last night it was a completely different feeling. Since I knew what to expect, I really enjoyed the movie for what it was, and not according to predetermined judgements or expectations. I even enjoyed the first half, which offered some really colorful insight into Wayne's training, and I was actually blown away by the whole film, because I finally realized its strength lies in its approach to the Batman myth. It makes us believe in him, believe that there can be a Batman in the real world, and to that extent the portrayal of Bruce Wayne is outstanding.
The same thing happened to me for Star Wars Episode 3. I had so many expectations for the first viewing that I couldn't help feeling a bit disappointed in certain aspects of the movie (I'll never forgive Lucas for ruining the most crucial scenes of the story, particularly the birth of the Emperor with his ridiculous frog-ish look, and the birth of Darth Vader with a NOOOO worthy of an Austin Powers movie). But I saw it a second time, I simply loved it, because I overlooked the little flaws and took the film for what it was supposed to be: a really really intense Star Wars experience.
So do as I said in the title folks, see them twice, you won't regret it!
