Reality Shift

10/3/2005 - Scaler

Slightly more than a year ago, I was working on Scaler, the in-house game of our studio.

It had started as a cute, adventure filled, weird creatures and colourful world project. Being a small studio, we needed a publisher to get the game out. Everything was going well, until our publisher got bought out by some bigger company, who then looked at our game and said: "Change it"
First, they thought the game was too cute, and asked for it to become more "edgy". Then, we were asked to add a human element, in a universe where no humans had never existed before (there may have been some business incentives to add a human in there, but I do not have the details of that).
The story was re-written. Not that we had a profound story before that, but it was fun. Now we had to try and explain the human element, give a whole new quest to the character. Much re-designing work was done, and though the team did their best, I still felt we lost something along the way.
When I get my website updated (soon, soon I promise), I'm going to post a bit of some Scaler re-development art. In the meantime, a teaser pic: research into the human appearance of Scaler.
