Commander Muffin

...And yet another character from the same series: It's Commander Muffin. I wanted to keep things military but not necessarily make it all guys. Muffin is Major Socks' commanding officer. The other two characters so far have both had some serious mass to them, so I wanted to keep that consistent for her as well, rather than making the usual svelte feline female. I'm happy with how she turned out: Not slender, but still very sexy...as well as being tough, too.

To answer your earlier questions, Laura, they DO have claws but like with any cat, they can be extended as needed. They didn't need them out in this case. I'd tried drawing them in but didn't like how they looked. As for the big hands, well hey, after creating Major Socks' hands, I had to keep things consistent.

Another very late night painting. I mentioned in yesterday's post (Major Socks) that I had other characters in mind for whatever astro-military service the Major is a member of. So this here is Admiral Whiskers:

So I was doing more doodling (see previous post) and I came up with this guy, a feline heavy-armored warrior. His name is Major Socks. He serves dutifully aboard the starship Fastpaw for his commanding officers, Commander Woogums and Captain Fluffy. The entire fleet is under the direction of Admiral Whiskers, whom I did a sketch of: He's a Persian, so he's got one of those smooshed puggy faces. I'll post it later, maybe even as a color piece. Anyhow, I did a couple of sketches of Major Socks and really liked him so I stayed up late to render him out. This whole thing, start to finish, is about 5 hours of work (the last hour of which was finicky (ha ha!) details that you probably can't even see at this resolution! )

Creature and Robot sketches

It's been ages since I uploaded just some plain old sketches, not for anything in particular, just for fun. The top left one was kind of a Moblin from the Zelda games, or at least inspired by them a bit. The lower right ones are shambling robots of some sort. Anyhow, nothing special, just having fun...

My new year is starting off with updates - the website, the blog (4 days late... oops), and developing a new store with my late 2008 calendar. If you're a client of mine this past year, you should have received your calendar by now (if not just email me!). Everybody else please be patient as the site should be up in the next week. If you can't wait just send me an email.

Here's a commission from this Christmas:

Over on the PixelBrush forums, we had a holiday art gift exchange. My recipient was Rita, who happens to be into faeries and mermaids and such. She's already "unwrapped" her present, so it's okay to show this now, my mermaid for her:

Well, Chanukkah is over, and I've since posted my finished artwork for this year's holiday cards... but I had a little fun throwing together the progression of the piece into an animated GIF file. Enjoy!

Every year I make a Christmas card for my mom to send out to all of her clients. It always has a winter activity theme, so this year's was curling. This be the front, minus the big ugly signature of course:

Another try at the colors

Trying to refine the colors a bit - lots more warmer colors around Vampi so that her pale skin really sticks out, the one cool spot on the page. I've de-empahsized Frankie's towel so that it doesn't grab so much attention. The umbrella is now darker so that it doesn't blend into the background. And I flipped the image so that Vampi's face gets seen sooner. As an extra-special bonus, I've included a close-up of Frankie's magazine, the monster edition of Cosmo.

Color progress on the Sunbathing Vampire

Here's the first pass at colors for the in-progress Sunbathing Vampire piece. I still may vignette the entire piece, make it look more like a spot illo - I haven't decided yet. And I still will add some sort of a design to the left towel. And I know the first pass at the foot-smoke isn't reading yet... it's a start!

I finished the Holiday Card that I was working on earlier. Here are the colors:

Chanukkah Alien - color
(Sorry to ruin the surprise for you, Laura!)

And now that that's done, I'm back to working on the tones for the Sunbathing Vampire picture I was doing before. Here is my start on the values for the characters. I just haven't got to the sand, towels, and props yet.

Cheers, and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

To those who didn't know, Carla and I have bought a house! It's a bit of a fixer-upper so we've been renovating like mad over the past month. That's why my blog has come to a halt - I've only had time for client's work and house work...

Now to kick things off again and get back to a somewhat regular schedule here. First off a shoutout to my hero Bobby Chiu who commented on my last Blades post - that really meant a lot! I've since finished the next edition of the Blades Program. I'm posting the initial sketch too, so you can see where things started:

And here's the final version:

Alien line art progression

An alien character I've been working on lately. Here's the progression from rough to final line art: First I just doodle in my sketchbook. I scan all of my sketches into Photoshop, mix and match parts, and then draw over that with a brush. When I'm satisfied, I print it out and trace it onto 55lb. Vellum with pencils. Next I'll scan it back into Photoshop to color it. more on that later...

Sunbathing Vampire

So as you know, I recently finished my entry for the CGTalk's latest Challenge, the theme for which was 'Strange Behavior.' While I ended up with Elves playing D&D, one of my earlier ideas was for a sunbathing vampire. Here are the really rough sketches that I did for that concept several months ago:

Sunbathing Vampires - very rough
I always liked that top doodle, and not that I have some more time, I thought it might be fun to develop it out into its own illo. Here's how it's coming so far:

Sunbathing Vampire - fleshed out moreThe woman on the left isn't a vampire, she's just her good friend the Bride of Frankenstein (or Girlfriend, or just a friend with benefits, something like that.) Hence the hairdo, and full exposure to the sun. She'll have Frankenstein-like scars , etc. But really, what I need to focus on first is just the general anatomy. How does it look? Any suggestions on making it better?

HELLO INTERNET!!!!  =D

So...  yeah...  'Been a while, hasn't it?  ;)  I've been sitting here trying to come up with a funny reason why i haven't posted anything in 4 billion years, ..but then i figured that's exactly what you'd all expect.  As if coming here with kitties wasn't predictable enough  =P

Here's something you may not be expecting, though:  i have uploaded 2 RARE pencil tests from the Iron Giant.  You'll want to check those out before WB tells me to take 'em down.

(( 'Good to be back  ^_^  ))

'Wandering Monsters', and a baby

Here's the final version of that piece I was working on earlier for CGTalk. It's roughly the same as the last post, but you'll notice a lot of subtle changes all over: I don't seem to be able to link this to a larger iamge, so head to my web page to see larger views and close-ups.

'Wandering Monsters'
And now that that's done, it's back to sketching new ideas. Here are some drawings of a baby chewing on a box... Not just any baby, but specifically my baby (although admittedly some sketches bear more of a resemblance than others.)

Baby sketches
Hmmm, they seem to have changed the interface on the image attachments here. Now it's easier to upload and attach and image to a blog, but harder to make that image link to something else. I liked the older interface which added finer control over your images. Oh, well.

A little color...

Wow, it's been ages since I posted here. I know, my bad... but man, having an infant around doesn't leave one with a lot of time to do as much art as I used to. I used to think 4 months to finish a CGTalk Challenge was an extravagant amount of time. Now the deadline is 19 days away and I'm going to have to work my butt off to make it - because when I'm home, even thoguh I love art, I love being with my little guy more. He's not going to be a little guy forever, y'know?

But anyhow, back to the art, thought I'd show you how the colors are coming along on the Strange Behavior entry:

Color version of the RPG Elves entry so far.

You can see more details of the progress here on my CGTalk thread.
